The Fire Rescue Communications Department is seeking Dispatcher Trainees. Dispatcher Trainees participate in training activities associated with preparing for the Florida Public Safety Telecommunicators examinations for 911 Public Safety Telecommunicators (PST). Applicants must meet minimum qualifications for this position, including assessments, as part of the qualification process. Trainees must successfully complete all requirements for Emergency Medical Dispatcher (EMD) and Emergency Fire Dispatcher (EFD) and complete the alarms in progress (AIP) and emergency call taking assessment.

2023 - 2024 New Hire Start Dates:

October 15, 2023 (Pre-employment paperwork due by September 15, 2023)
February 5, 2024 (Pre-employment paperwork due by January 5, 2024)
June 10, 2024 (Pre-employment paperwork due May 10, 2024)
September 29, 2024 (Pre-employment paperwork due by August 30, 2024)

Representative Duties

Receive 232 state-mandated training hours for PST.
Attend and participate in the Emergency Telecommunicator Course (ETC) classes.
Attend and participate in the Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) classes.
Attend and participate in the Emergency Fire Dispatch (EFD) classes.
Attend CPR training.
Training on the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system.
Training on the 911-phone system.
Training on the 800 MHz radio system.
Trainees must successfully complete the alarms in progress (AIP) and emergency call taking assessment within one (1) year of employment.

Minimum Qualifications

High School graduate or equivalent plus one (1) year experience in either computers, customer service or data entry or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
If applicant meets the minimum qualifications, the applicant must also successfully complete a Dispatcher assessment, which includes data entry, spelling, decision-making, etc. as part of the application process. Please see detailed assessment information in Notes section of the job posting.

Offers of employment: Any offer of employment will be contingent on successfully passing Orange County Fire Rescue's pre-employment process, which includes, a Level II criminal background screening, drug and physical test, polygraph test, fingerprints, and reference check.
By accepting a Dispatcher Trainee position, the new hire Dispatcher Trainee will agree to complete the Dispatcher Trainee requirements in the prescribed timeframe in order to be promoted to a Dispatcher role.

The requirements are:

Trainee must obtain Florida 911 Public Safety Telecommunicator (PST) certification within one (1) year of employment and maintain certification while employed. Employees are required to complete PST refresher training every two (2) years.

Dispatcher Trainees must obtain Emergency Medical Dispatcher (EMD) and Emergency Fire Dispatcher (EFD) certifications within one (1) year of employment and maintain certifications while employed. Employees are required to complete EMD and EFD refresher training every two (2) years.

This position requires a very intensive training period of both classroom and on-the-job training. Much of this training requires independent study. The initial training period is up to twelve months; a course in advanced first aid and telephone techniques for giving pre-arrival instructions will be provided. Must complete agency provided training within prescribed time limits of policy and procedure.

$17.91/hour $18.75/hour (After successful completion of the Dispatcher Trainee requirements, as described in the Notes section of this job posting, Trainees will be eligible to move to a Dispatcher position in approximately 12 weeks).
