This position will be responsible for assisting higher grade mechanics with equipment repairs.
This position is considered safety-sensitive and subject to the provisions of the Substance Abuse Program Policy for Safety Sensitive Positions.
Essential Functions:
• Completes scheduled and non-scheduled maintenance on all systems and safety equipment on transit coaches for safe operations.
• Carries out ordinary mechanical, hydraulic or structural maintenance repairs and adjustments.
• Determines the source of trouble.
• Repairs or replaces defective parts or makes changes as instructed.
• Refers difficult or unusual problems to higher grade employees for guidance or repair.
• Executes field repairs on road failures and tows buses if necessary.
• Tunes and repairs on road failures and tows buses if necessary.
• Repairs engines: replaces all major engine components including cylinder heads
• Replaces transmission; replaces all external components.
• Replaces engine/transmission assemblies and accessories.
• Diagnoses and repairs air systems and components and relines brakes.
• Repairs and replaces all steering and suspension components.
• Performs basic electrical diagnoses and repairs on electrical systems; replaces components.
• Performs major repairs, component replacement and Schedule “A” and “C” inspections on wheel chair lifts.
• Performs minor repairs and replaces A/C components.
• Performs other duties as may be required or assigned.
Required Qualifications:
• High School diploma or GED plus three years’ experience in transit or heavy vehicle maintenance and one year of technical school; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
• Must possess and maintain a current Florida CDL permit/license, Class “B” with Passenger endorsement and Airbrakes.
Below is the eligibility criteria for internal maintenance employees to be eligible for a promotion. In addition to meeting the job requirements, they must also meet these requirements.
No Work Rule violations from Section 6 - Conduct, 6.1, General (Gross Misconduct) within the past twelve months
No more than three (3) write-ups for any reason within the past twelve months
No more than five (5) chargeable absences within the past twelve months
No suspensions within the past twelve months
Below is the eligibility criteria for internal bus operators to be eligible for a promotion. In addition to meeting the job requirements, they must also meet these requirements.
No Class "C" violations within the past twelve months
No more than 1 Class “B” violation within the past twelve months
No safety related violations within the past twelve months
No more than three (3) Class"A" violations for any reason within the past twelve months
No more than five (5) chargeable absences within the past twelve months
No suspensions within the past twelve months
No more than three (3) miss-outs (combined Miss/MPW) within the past twelve months
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):
• Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
• Ability to work with limited supervision.
• Ability to bend, stoop, walk, stretch, kneel, and lift 50 lbs.
• Ability to work as part of a team.
• Ability to work days, nights, weekends and holidays.
• Ability to pass a DOT physical and drug screen.
• Ability to work in open bays, inside buses and outside in varying weather conditions.
• Ability to handle and use commercial cleaners and toxic materials to perform duties.
• Ability to provide own tools.
• Ability to effectively communicate in English, both orally and in writing.
• Ability to exhibit a professional, courteous demeanor.
• Ability to work in a diverse environment.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with those encountered in the course of work using principles of excellent service.
Work Environment and Special Considerations:
• Employees in this position must comply with all requirements of the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) regarding the testing of safety sensitive-employees. This position is considered safety-sensitive under FTA drug and alcohol regulations (49 CFR Part 655).
• LYNX provides the community with much needed public transportation, and it is important for the Agency to resume its services as quickly and as safely as possible in the event of any natural, technological, or human-caused emergency or disaster. This position is considered a mission critical member of LYNX’s emergency preparation and response efforts during an emergency or disaster and as such, requires 24-hour availability in the event of an emergency or disaster.
