Description:

This is an independent professional Senior Community Health Nurse position in the School Health Program working under the supervision of a Senior Community Health Nursing Supervisor. This nurse provides community health nursing services in assigned schools, including home assessments as needed in the interest of school health. Ensures client records are secure and confidentiality is maintained. This position requires driving to various schools throughout Orange County. Reliable transportation and a valid Florida Driver’s License are required. Provides and coordinates generalized school health services at assigned schools according to the local School Health Services Plan. Demonstrates an in-depth knowledge of health needs, both physical and emotional of school-aged children as evidenced by ability to deliver health promotion education, disease prevention education, and health protection services.

Performs student record reviews in assigned schools to determine compliance with the following: Certification of Immunization or Certificate of Immunization Exemption, Health examinations within the past twelve months for students entering Florida’s schools for the first time to ensure compliance with current laws and requirements. Conducts Orange County Public Schools (OCPS) clinic reviews in assigned schools to ensure policies (Medication Administration, Emergency Supplies), and procedures are followed. Reviews annual training of designated OCPS personal with verification of delegate’s understanding of assignment is documented to ensure compliance with current laws and regulations.

Participates and conducts basic health screenings (Vision, Scoliosis, Growth, and Development {Body Mass Index}) to school-aged children. Conducts training of DOH- Orange County and Orange County Public Schools (OCPS) staff to help in these screenings. Ensures all basic health screening services provided are entered into the Health Management System (HMS). For students requiring further medical evaluation, ensures referrals are sent out to parents notifying them of their child’s need to be seen by their primary care practitioner for further medical evaluation. Ensures follow-up to parents whom referrals were made and tracks progress.

Provides health education classes to DOH- Orange County and Orange County Public School (OCPS) staff. Participates in orientation and training of new staff as requested. Provides training and instruction to DOH- Orange County and Orange County Public School staff in immunization policies, procedures, and protocols. Communicates with school staff and parents as needed to update requirements. Participates in health fairs and community events (Immunization events) on-going. Provides immunizations to children in Orange County to prepare for back-to-school season and as needed. Ensures vaccines once administered are entered into Florida Shots and Florida’s Health Management System (HMS).

Participates in mandatory New Hire Orientation and Annual FDOH trainings. Attends staff meetings, in-service and trainings. Ensures professional development by completing mandatory trainings, webinars, and on-line trainings. Provides training to both FDOH Orange direct reports and OCPS staff as needed.

Performs other related duties as required including such activities as developing staff, mentors, coaches, motivates staff, individually and as a group; understands and supports diversity; and maintains a positive work environment. Provides nursing support as needed at outreach/awareness and incident response events within the community to include mass immunizations, emergency response activities, and community health engagements. Nursing support may be required outside of normal business hours to accommodate community needs during evening and weekend hours. Demonstrates knowledge of appropriate nursing skills identified in the Nursing Competency Checklist.
