Job Description

Position: Day Treatment/Phase II - Counselor II

Function: Responsible for addressing the needs and development of the client’s cognitive, behavioral, vocational and other social skills.

Responsibilities:

1. To reduce the substance abuse relapse of program participants by providing individual and group
counseling.
2. Develop individualized treatment plans and provide case management. Treatment plans must be
reviewed and updated every thirty (30) days. Individual sessions must be completed every thirty (30)
days for one (1) hour.
3. Responsible for completing and turning in on time all required client documentation to the Program
Director (this includes closed files, census rosters and transmittal sheets) so that they may be reviewed
and submitted by the 5th day of each month.
4. Preparing the participant by providing life and job skills training including financial management,
parenting training, anger management, HIV education, victimization, vocational and structured leisure
activities. This includes teaching social skills and adhering to established group rules of program.
5. Responsible for maintaining a minimum census of twenty (20) clients on the day treatment census.
Intervention census must maintain a minimum of ten (10) clients and the Aftercare census must
maintain a minimum of five (5) clients.
6. Intervention clients must be assessed and transferred into the day treatment program within three (3)
weeks.
7. Responsible for maintaining original, accurate and up-to-date case records in a timely and thorough
manner on each client consistent with program policy, 42 CFR and the 65D-30, F.A.C. This includes
weekly progress reports, group notes and monthly reports required by referral sources.
8. Responsible for reporting to staff supervisor all pertinent information that would serve in the client's
and/or agency's best interest.
9. Responsible for conforming to all codes of ethics established regarding performance of duty, client
interaction and confidentiality, etc.
10. Responsible for assisting in maintaining the overall cleanliness, safety, repairs and upkeep of the facility
in which the program operates.
11. Responsible for fee collection based on federal poverty guidelines and a sliding scale fee with a
minimum daily collection fee per client of two (2) dollars.
12. Maintain and establish relationships with referral sources.
13. Report to the Florida Abuse Registry any and all suspected cases of abuse, neglect or exploitation as
required by D.O.P. #150-1.
14. May be required to drive your personal vehicle for meetings, appointments, conferences, errands, etc.
15. May be required to drive the van to transport clients and/or their children if necessary.
16. Performs other related tasks as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

1. A thorough knowledge of substance abuse and mental health counseling techniques.
2. A thorough knowledge of group dynamics and the required skills to effectively facilitate group therapy.
3. Thorough knowledge of individual counseling techniques.
4. An ability to work flexible hours including nights, weekends and holidays if necessary.
5. An ability to use initiative and creativity in effective problem solving.
6. Ability to work with clients of complex needs and from diverse populations.
7. Must be punctual and complete all assignments by assigned deadlines.
8. Good organizational skills.
9. Ability to work collaboratively and as part of a team.
10. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
11. Ability to drive a car as well as a fifteen (15) passenger van.
12. Be willing to submit to random drug testing.
13. Must have thorough knowledge and understanding of the Clinical Documentation Manual.

Minimum Education, Experience and/or Training:

1. A Bachelor’s and/or Master’s Degree from an accredited institution in a related field.
2. Three (3) years work experience in the substance abuse treatment field preferred.
3. A minimum of two (2) years of abstinence if recovering from chemical dependency.
4. Must pass a required background screening every five (5) years.
5. A Valid Florida Driver’s License.
6. Ability to drive a fifteen (15) passenger van.
7. A thorough knowledge of laws governing driving and roads in the area.
8. Complete the twenty (20) hours of state mandated training requirements detailed in the Florida
Administrative Code 65D-30 each fiscal year.
9. Complete the necessary sections of the Competency Checklist Packet with your supervisor within six (6)
months in order to move from probationary to permanent status with the agency.
10. Complete four (4) hours AIDS training within six (6) months.
11. Complete CPR/First Aid Training within six (6) months.
