Position Description #12

Basic Function

Under general direction of the Measurement & Regulatory Services Supervisor, performs simple to moderately difficult, skilled work requiring basic judgment in the layout, sizing, and installation of gas piping, meters, and regulators.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

1. Determine proper layout, sizing and installation of commercial and residential gas piping, meters, regulators and relief valves.
2. Install residential and commercial meter sets and by-passes.
3. Install and adjust regulators and relief valves.
4. Inspect, connect, test and check gas appliances for proper installation, venting and combustion air.
5. Turn on new and established accounts performing appropriate tests for leaks, adjusting pressures and ensuring proper operation of appliances.
6. Assist in installation and programming of meters and electronic read transmitters (ERT’s).
7. Troubleshoot and perform meter/ERT maintenance.
8. Perform meter shop duties as required.
9. Operate, maintain, and calibrate combustible gas indicators and other leak detection equipment.
10. Perform leak surveys using leak detection equipment and instruments.
11. Respond to leak calls and cut lines and make necessary repairs as needed.
12. Investigate, classify and repair leaks on District facilities and piping.
13. Assist other departmental employees as assigned.
14. Deliver materials and appliances to job sites as assigned.
15. Operate department vehicles and perform normal operator maintenance.
16. Maintain tools and equipment.
17. Responsible for inventory items obtained from stock or carried in vehicle.
18. Complete all necessary paperwork and reports.
19. Attend training sessions as assigned by supervisor.
20. Perform other duties as required

Knowledge, Education and Skill Requirements

Requires graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma. Requires 1 - 2 years appropriate gas experience. Must be able to learn and perform procedures to meet departmental standards. Must have basic computer skills with a working knowledge of different types of software programs, and ability to learn additional programs as needed.

Drivers License: This position requires a valid Florida drivers license and an acceptable driving record to be covered under District’s insurance plan.

Confidentiality: Absolute confidentiality is required in day to day work.

Standby: Will be required to perform emergency standby duty after normal working hours.

Environmental conditions: Inside and outside work; in heat, cold, high humidity; in bright sunshine; in dampness and chilling conditions; with flames; in dust; exposure and close proximity to dogs, cats and other animals; in dry conditions, in noisy conditions; in high speed traffic and along road ways; with petroleum based products and oils; with natural gas leaks; on slippery or uneven surfaces; in or with moving objects or vehicles; on or with ladders or scaffolding; at heights above ground level; below ground confined spaces (ditches, tunnels, holes); with feet, legs or hands in water; with explosives; with vibrations; working closely with others or alone; with poor lighting and ventilation; miscellaneous odors and fumes; with odors of gas.

Drug/alcohol testing: Employees in this position are required to undergo testing for alcohol and illegal drugs.
