General Counsel: 

The Office of the General Counsel serves as legal counsel to the University of Central Florida Board of Trustees, acting for and on behalf of the University as an institution. Legal services are provided to the Board of Trustees and to the President, the Provost, vice presidents, deans, unit heads, and other representatives of the University acting in their capacity as employees. The Office of the General Counsel also serves as legal counsel to the University’s Direct Support Organizations.

MISSION

The mission of the Office is to facilitate and advance the education, research and service missions of the University, by providing legal counsel designed to minimize the risk of adverse legal and financial consequences that can result from failing to adhere to applicable law and regulations or avoid undertaking high-risk activities without sufficient safeguards.

PROFESSIONAL SERVICES:

The Office serves the University by acting as a collaborative resource for informed decision-making and creative problem-solving; providing legal advice and educating University personnel about legal requirements and risks through consultations and training; reviewing University contracts and other commercial activities, as directed by the University; representing and advocating for the University in judicial and other proceedings; keeping abreast of legislative, regulatory, and legal developments to ensure University compliance and to stay ahead of key developments affecting higher education at large; and coordinating the provision of legal services for the University, whether through the Office, or through outside legal representatives, to ensure efficiency, cost containment, and quality of service.

The Opportunity:

The Paralegal II is responsible for performing a variety of administrative duties and professional support services necessary to organize, manage, and consolidate documents and information for an effective case process within the Office of the General Counsel at a forward-thinking, dynamic, large University. The primary scope of work includes fulfilling public records requests, responding to subpoenas, and providing day-to-day litigation support to attorneys.

Responsibilities:

Responds to routine as well as complex requests for public records under F.S. Chapter 119.

Collaborates with various departments in responding to requests that are complicated, sensitive and/or high profile that may involve a high level of media interest and scrutiny.

Researches and collects relevant documentation.

Tracks and updates status of requests; manages and coordinates responses.

Obtains responsive materials for public records requests under F.S. Chapter 119.

Reviews for and applies applicable state and/or federal redactions, responds in timely manner, and approves requests submitted through the university's ServiceNow workflow for pulling of public records by ISO employees.

Organizes and maintains electronic litigation case files.

Calendars litigation deadlines and reminders.

Schedules witness interviews, meetings, hearings, mediations, arbitrations, and depositions.

Arranges for court reporter, conference rooms, parking and any other necessary logistics of litigation or investigation-related events.

Attends scheduled events to assist Associate General Counsels with document management and coordination of witnesses.

Gathers, organizes, and produces documents responsive to discovery requests and/or subpoenas in both federal and state court.

Makes redactions according to the appropriate rules of civil procedure.

Drafts discovery requests, responses, and objections for attorney review.

Provides and conducts routine training for university on the Public Records Act, individual records requests, and the university's policies and procedures.

Advises departments on specific state and federal exemptions and best practices.

Works as a liaison with the university's Records Management Liaison Officer.

Performs legal research including federal and state statutes and case law.

Researches and analyzes statutes, regulations, legal articles, judicial decisions, legislative history, and other legal sources; provides written analysis and recommendations to attorneys assigned.

Drafts, prepares, and processes legal correspondence for attorney review.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's or Master's degree and 4+ years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience pursuant toFla. Stat. 112.219. Click here for more information

Preferred Qualifications:

Previous paralegal experience.

Experience in Education or Government Entity preferred.
