Résumé Essentials: Make Your First Impression Count

Make Your Résumé Work for You!

At CFEC, we review thousands of résumés through our job fairs and online resources. Many are excellent, but others unintentionally hold job seekers back.

Your résumé is often your first impression. Make it count! Here are practical tips to help you stand out for the right reasons.

10 Ways to Strengthen Your Résumé

  1. Make your contact information easy to find. Include your name, city and state, ZIP code, phone number, and professional email address. A full street address is usually unnecessary.
  2. Use a professional email address. Keep it simple and appropriate for the workplace. Your email address is part of your first impression!
  3. Proofread carefully. Correct spelling, grammar, punctuation, and spacing matter. Even small errors can distract employers from your qualifications.
  4. Format consistently. Spell out Florida or use the standard abbreviation, FL. Keep capitalization and formatting consistent throughout.
  5. Choose a clean, readable design. Use a professional font, such as Arial or Calibri, in black text. Avoid elaborate designs that may be difficult for applicant tracking systems (ATS) to read.
  6. Skip the photo. Unless specifically requested or customary for the role, leave your picture off your résumé.
  7. Keep it concise. Aim for one page if you're early in your career; two pages are generally appropriate for experienced professionals. Prioritize relevant qualifications over unnecessary details.
  8. Focus on your professional value. Leave out personal stories, family details, marital status, and other information unrelated to the job.
  9. Eliminate first-person language. Instead of writing, "I managed a team," write, "Managed a team of 10 employees."
  10. Choose your words carefully. Check commonly confused words, such as their and there, and use clear, professional language.

Make Your Experience Stand Out

A strong résumé is more than a list of previous jobs. It highlights your skills, accomplishments, and the value you bring to an employer.

✔ Use bullet points to improve readability.
✔ Start statements with strong action verbs.
✔ Highlight measurable accomplishments whenever possible.
✔ Tailor your résumé to the position you're seeking.
✔ Proofread one final time before submitting!
